3/1/2011 Waller Creek Tunnel Project takes another step forward

On Thursday, February 24th the Austin City Council approved hiring a construction firm to begin building the main portion of the Waller Creek Tunnel project through downtown Austin. This project, which will reduce the size of the 100-year floodplain and provide flood control and water quality enhancement for Waller Creek, is expected to spur economic development and revitalize the area which has seen little progress over the last 30 years.

Vickrey & Associates, Inc. (V&A) has been involved with the project since 2005, providing surveying and civil support services for the estimated 6,000-foot-long stormwater bypass tunnel. Specifically, V&A’s responsibilities included existing utility research and mapping, cost estimation of utility relocation for each of the eight alignments, property ownership research for alignment adjoiners, preparation of ownership mapping, and resolution of ROW taking on adjoiners. V&A also proposed and ultimately prepared the metes and bounds for the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Investment Zone boundary limits in lieu of a standard boundary survey. This recommendation saved the City over $100,000 in professional land survey fees and reduced the schedule by four months. V&A’s TIF exhibit is currently available for Public Information at the City of Austin’s Waller Creek Information web site, http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/wallercreek/downloads/wc_tif_boundaries.pdf.

V&A will also be providing observation services on an as needed basis as the project proceeds through construction. Check back often for updates on the progress of this high-profile project for the City of Austin.
