Austin Clean Water Program Honored
Austin's Clean Water Program, an Environmental Protection Agency-ordered effort to end sewage
overflows into neighborhoods, has been named one of the top infrastructure programs in North
America's history by the International Right of Way Association. The association ranked the
project eighth on its top 10 list of best infrastructure projects over the past 75 years. The
$400 million program joined Florida's Turnpike Suncoast Parkway, the City of Phoenix Light
Rail Project and the
Golden Gate Bridge, among others, according to a release from the Austin
Water Utility. Austin's real estate department secured 861 separate agreements allowing the
city to run pipes across properties or do other work, the release said. The city spent $15
million securing the agreements and making 100 separate projects possible, according to
the water utility. The remaining five projects should be finished in March. The EPA
deadline is June. - News release from the Austin Water Public Affairs Office
